Marriage in 60s, Your feet gotta look white

I grew up in 80s and one thing that was pretty cool about them was they were so so chilled and safe for parents, kids. In this blog series, I am going to write a few stories from 80s, things that happened around me, they will all be anonymous. So when it starts, I will write the characters in story, and just write it like a scene, some episode in a serial.

First story starts :

Characters : Savi- 17 year old girl who lives in a remote village near chattarpur, mp
Varun- 35 year old man living working in a city as engineer with some contractor.

Scene 1 : Savi regularly goes to school, she is one of those A listed students in village. She wants to be a doctor and loves biology. Why is every poor kid talented and wants to study? I don't know, its just fate's way of telling them what they could have but can't have. One of these days, on her way back home from school, she realizes something is gonna wrong and her intuitions haven't failed her. There is this 35 year old guy coming to see her with his mother, why did the parents agree? Why won't they, they have 15 children, its hard to feed them and she being the youngest only girl in the family is still like a burden. They just want to marry her off to this really nice earning guy. They never checked his background. The major reason for saying yes is no dowry option from guy. Well don't judge the guy yet. Obviously, she is sad, angry, frustrated and hoping guy rejects her.

Scene 2: Savi is getting a pedicure at home, they are rubbing gram flour mixed with turmeric and kesar. Why feet? Because they don't show face to strangers. So whether he will marry her or not depends on how her feet look. Okay so this lean guy called Varun comes with mustache and bell bottoms. He is greeted by her brothers and after feet examination, says yes for marriage. Poor girl is all sobbing, even more angry but what could she have done. A month later, they are married. An year later, they have girl, another year later another girl. Thankfully they stopped at that point. Of course that is another story. But you know what, they celebrated their 30th anniversary and are a normal happy couple.

What if she didn't get married to him? Hmm she wouldn't be a doctor for sure because anyways her parents would have tied her to some villager. The good thing is she got to move to a city, lives in well furnished house with fully centralized AC and everything she will ever need. Her husband listens to her and they are so much in love. What if he didn't marry her? I don't know, I think he could have married some other girl. But he wouldn't be so happy and healthy as he is now.

Everything that happens in our life is for a reason.
